bioidentical hormones

terms and information

Bioidentical hormones, or more precisely human-identical hormones, are structurally identical to hormones produced by the human body. They are used in BHT (bioidentical hormone therapy) to maintain or restore hormone balance.

“one size fits all”?

The finished medicinal products available on the market have a limited range due to fixed dosages, unavailable dosage forms, fillers or cream bases with allergenic potential.

"Not all patients are the same"

In BHT, natural hormones are composed specifically for each patient and adapted to their individual needs. The preparation of magistral formulations takes into account individual combinations and dosages as well as suitable dosage forms for patients.

Many doctors with experience in bioidentical hormone therapy attend our training courses and conferences. If you are looking for a doctor in your area, please feel free to contact us at office@weltapotheke.at

Dosage forms:

Special galenics: Creams suitable for BHRT must have a high compatibility for lipophilic active ingredients in order to be suitable carriers for hormones. They should be free of perfume, petroleum jelly, silicones and other mineral oils in order to ensure good tolerability and perfect penetration of the active ingredients.

Liposomal gel has a light, quickly absorbed texture. The liposomes it contains transport hormones into deeper layers of the skin and significantly increase the active ingredient levels in the stratum corneum.

Homeopathic preparations of hormones are available without a prescription if diluted to the 4th decimal potency (D4) or higher. Despite this fact, we generally do not recommend self-treatment in the case of problems with a hormonal background.

When bioidentical hormones are emulsified in fats, a stable suspension is created that allows the liver metabolism to be bypassed (“first pass effect”). According to studies, this step is an essential factor in the oral effectiveness of the hormones. Fats used to produce Lipocaps include cocoa butter and olive oil.

With this modern dosage form, the hormones are absorbed through the oral mucosa. For buccal application, lozenges are placed in the cheek pouch, whereas for sublingual application, they are placed under the tongue. Depending on the condition of the oral mucosa and saliva, the melting time is 30-40 minutes. Lozenges have the great advantage of being divisible.

SR-Retard preparations are used for the continuous slow release of the active ingredient from a matrix over a longer period of time.

Bioidentical hormones are emulsified in fats/oils and formulated with zinc, copper and vitamin D in individual doses.

Depending on the solubility of the prescribed hormones, hormone drops can be made in oil or glycerin/alcohol mixtures.

Since in cases of extreme dryness in the intimate area almost any application with water and/or alcohol content in creams burns and leads to further irritation, the use of water-free creams is recommended.
These consist exclusively of waxes and fatty oils with a solid, waxy consistency. A small proportion of essential oils has a hormone-regulating and wound-healing effect. The extract is preferably taken with a spatula.

When used vaginally, absorption occurs via the vaginal mucosa
The vaginal application of Ovulae is always advantageous when there is a local problem due to a hormone deficiency, e.g. dryness of the vaginal mucosa

When used anal, absorption occurs via the mucous membrane.
The anal application of is always advantageous when there is a local problem due to a hormone deficiency, e.g. prostate hyperplasia

FAQ / frequently asked questions:

  • Airless pump dispenser:
Airless pump dispensers guarantee a permanently controlled dosage. One pump stroke corresponds to 1g of cream. The percentage of hormones is thus precisely dosed and application errors are minimized at the same time. It enables the user to hygienically remove creams with maximum durability by excluding oxygen. Pump dispensers are available in 50g and 100g.
  • brown glass
We use medical brown glass bottles with and without droppers, pipettes or pumps. The brown glass protects the ingredients from UV radiation, among other things.

We manufacture suppositories according to strict specifications.

  • Bisphenol A - free suppository molds
  • BPA free
  • latex free

In addition to the general laboratory area, the World Pharmacy has special rooms for the production of hormone formulations. Formulations are produced in safety workbenches with the highest standards of product and employee protection.

To ensure the accuracy and uniformity of the recipes, we use state-of-the-art equipment that meets established quality standards. The equipment is regularly checked by external certification and calibration companies and its maintenance is documented

Only raw materials of pharmaceutical quality may be used to produce prescriptions in pharmacies. They must meet the requirements of the pharmacopoeia and must also be manufactured in accordance with the requirements of Good Manufacturing Practice.

To check quality and identity, we follow the current standards of the relevant pharmacopoeias. In addition, we have the latest technical equipment at our disposal, such as IR (infrared spectroscopy) and UV-VIS spectrometers. Independent tests (HPLC - high performance liquid chromatography) are also carried out by external analysis laboratories.
