Thyroid extract is the processed thyroid gland from pigs.
In addition to the thyroid hormones T4 and T3, the extract also contains all other “metabolically active” hormones (T2 and T1), calcitonin, thyroglobulin, selenium-containing enzymes, amino acids and small amounts of organically bound iodine.

Natural thyroid extracts from various animals were the form of therapy for hypothyroidism worldwide for many decades. Until 1996 (3rd supplement), the monograph “Thyreoidea Siccata/dried thyroid” could be found in the Austrian Pharmacopoeia.

Nowadays, there is only one monograph in the USP (United States Pharmacopeia) for the porcine thyroid. This means that all prescription drugs and also the individual prescription formulations made by pharmacies contain the porcine thyroid as the active ingredient.

There are only a few manufacturers worldwide that produce Thyroid according to the requirements of the pharmacopoeia and meet the requirements. According to the specifications, the following additions to the content setting are permitted:
- lactose
- Strength
- dextrose
- sucrose
- Salt
Depending on which manufacturer a pharmacy sources its raw materials from, these additives may be included and should be requested in case of intolerance.
